Flood Prevention & Surface Water Drainage

Design Services and Measures

Survey and checks on existing conditions, including liaison with the relevant Authorities and Environment Agency regarding rainfall predictions and tidal effects where necessary, together with consideration of topographical and geotechnical features.

Full review of actual flooding in the area and the existing outlets and drainage provisions already in place.

A Surface Water Drainage Strategy (SWDS) is established, with compliance with Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) requirements, and a report produced.

A site visit is necessary to acquire details of the client's existing flooding problems or proposals regarding any new development, together with any advice or constraints identified by the Authorities, in order to provide a satisfactory and viable scheme for planning approval.

Filtration tests for soakaways are also available.

Wastewater Treatment Works

We were the Project Manager for the main contractor for the extension to Leatherhead Sewage Treatment Works, involving the construction of a pumping station, two large reinforced-concrete oxidation tanks, various pipelines and alterations to existing parts of the treatment works.

In a consultancy capacity, we also provided estimates for caissons, shafts, pipelines and construction for various improvement schemes for a national contractor at the Water Authorities' offices at Maple Lodge Sewage Treatment Works in Hertfordshire.

Cost analysis, site construction management services and temporary works designs are available.

Piling – Appropriate Piles and Techniques

Advice on the appropriate type of piling, design and application is available.

We can arrange and manage enquiries, contracts and site management for piling works and advise on a suitable piling contractor.

Advice provided would be taken into account for the following:

Establishing the required pile-bearing working loads and arrange piling enquiries, including the relevant geotechnical investigations and contract conditions. Also advise on the most suitable and cost-effective contractor to engage.

Geotechnical and Ground Anchors

Following appraisal of geotechnical maps of the area, the project concept and site layout, We can advise on the type and number of boreholes required.

Additional soil tests, including rock testing, may be needed if geotextiles are to be used to prevent slippage of embankment surfaces, and similarly if ground anchors are proposed or rockfall-retention frames are required.

Project and Construction Management

We can act as the client's appointed Administrator, Project Manager or The Engineer on proposed civil construction project contracts from conception to completion, subject to the terms and conditions of the professional services contract arranged between us and the client.

The terms and conditions can take many forms, including:

  • NEC4 professional services terms and conditions
  • Administrator and QS services under the RICS terms and conditions for JCT works contracts
  • Engineer services under contracts previously derived from the 5th and 6th Editions of the old ICE contracts, now available via the Association of Consulting Engineers
  • An entirely bespoke professional services contract derived and agreed between the client and us.
Pre-Construction – Estimating, Planning, Value Engineering and Handover

We have the capacity and resources to provide complete civil engineering estimates and tender submissions, including taking off quantities and forwarding all necessary particulars to material suppliers and potential subcontractors, with appropriate conditions in line with the main contract terms and conditions.

Liaison with the client's representatives would form part of our duties, together with dealing with any tender ancillary information forwarded with the tender bid.

Planning the works and methods of construction would be developed during the compilation of the tender, and a full programme for the works derived.

We have 10 years' experience in producing heavy engineering tenders, including approximately four years running an estimating department.

All types of tenders have been produced, from potable water supply rising mains, pumping stations and reservoirs to large reclamation schemes involving up to 5 million m³ of earthworks.

Experience also includes coast protection works with aprons, reinforced-concrete wave walls and groynes; road and bridge works; and Network Rail bridges and platforms.

Other tender experience includes cofferdams in the Thames for a new south-west outfall for the Greenwich Millennium site, and marine works tenders such as the deep-water berth for tankers at Immingham on the Humber.

Tenders have also been produced for major road and bridge works in Ireland.

Full procedures for compiling and submitting a tender will be produced when an enquiry is made to use our services.

QS Duties – Contractual Claims and Compensation Events

We have personally provided Senior QS services on projects on behalf of main contractors and major subcontractors, including providing guidance to junior surveyors.

Contractual advice has been provided to many contractors, and contractual claims have also been compiled.

Renewables – Tidal Energy

Currently, investigations and research are being undertaken regarding tidal energy.

Although a great deal of information and work has been produced and carried out by other organisations in this field, we are confident that the particular concept under review by us has not yet been explored or presented.
